Self talk is an important aspect of any change. What we say to ourselves becomes our own actual truth. When we say things like I will never lose weight, exercising takes to much time or eating healthy is allot of hassle these statements become truth to us. There are many reasons that we may talk in a negative manner to ourselves. One reason is that we are afraid of failure. We may have not reached our goals in the past, or we may just be unsure that we will be able to succeed the fear of failure is a powerful thing and it is much easier to come up with reason that we can’t succeed than to take a chance and admit failure. Another reason is that we have just become comfortable with our negative self talk. Even though we may think; I want to lose weight, I want to be healthier and I want to have more energy, we have in fact become comfortable with our thinking that has prevented us from really pursuing and obtaining those goals. Change can be a scary thing.
In Dr. Phil’s book The Ultimate Weight Solution he very effectively talks about how to change the way that we talk to ourselves. I will discuss some of his advise in another article. The main thing is that we need to recognize our self talk and work hard to change it. I don’t mean to recite mantras over and over again all day, although I know of some people who recite a mantra ever morning and find that helpful, but what I am talking about is aligning your self talk with your goals. For instance if you have made a goal to exercise three times a week and then you start thinking, I really don’t like exercising, I really don’t have time to exercise, I don’t have the right clothes, the right shoes, whatever the negative self talk is you need to recognize it for what it is. When you have these negative conversations stop and say, is this going to help me accomplish my goal? Turn the talk around so that it will help you accomplish the goal. I do have time to exercise even if I have to change my schedule around, I don’t need special shoes or clothes in order to get started, I can like exercising because it will help me reach my goal.
Remember you can do hard things. You have done hard things before and you can do this too. Changing the way that you feel about food, nutrition, your health and exercise may be a really heard thing to do, but you can do it.
