Bo Bice became popular because of season 4 of American Idol. He was the first true Southern rocker to be on the show. He actually made it to the final two, losing out to Carrie Underwood in the end. His mother had encouraged him to try out for the show in the beginning, but at that time the age limit was 25 and he was too old. When American Idol raised the age limit it opened the door for him to audition.
